Today, more and more people are shunning their four wheeled cars and trucks in favor of the two-wheeled bicycle. There are many reasons for this, including a desire to live a greener existence as well as have a more active, healthy lifestyle. Most people still use their cars, but switch to bicycles for small trips such as to the store or to commute for work. If you think you would like to take up biking but live in a hilly area, you may want to consider opting for a motorized bicycle. Motorized bikes assist the bicyclist on hills or very long trips that would otherwise be undoable.
Most motorized bikes use an electric motor these days. You can still get gasoline powered engines, but they are noisier, messier and heavier than the electric model. There are also different types of engines that will give you varying amounts of assistance. For example, some engines will only run if you are also pedaling at the same time, while others will operate like a motorcycle where you won’t have to pedal at all to get the extra push from the engine.
Because more and more people are taking an interest in motorized bicycles, they are becoming more frequently stocked by bicycle companies and manufacturers. When you buy a bicycle with a motor already built in, you are sure to get a very good, solid bike that will probably last you a long time. However, these bikes are not cheap. If you don’t have the extra cash lying around to buy an expensive motorized bike, one option is to buy the engine kit separately and attach it to the bicycle you already have. Most kits cost around $100 to $200 and are fairly easy to assemble. This is a great way to upgrade your bicycle without spending a fortune.
If you do decide to go the motorized bicycle route, be sure to check out the local motor laws in your area. Some states require you to have the bicycle registered and some may even require you to have a license to ride it. It’s also a good idea to find out about using the bike lanes. Most motorized bicycles are allowed in bike lanes as long as they stay under a certain speed limit.
Remember to practice being safe with your motorized bicycle. This goes for when you install the motor as well as when you ride it down the street. Some motorized bikes can get up to around 40mph, which is quite fast. Crashing at this speed could cause injury to you and damage to the bike. Because of this, it’s a good idea to practice riding the bike around before taking it out on the roads. It’s also important that you always wear a helmet with your new bike. By taking a few precautions you will be able to enjoy all the great benefits of biking, but with a little extra help from the motor.
