Mountain Bike Single Speed
What is a cheap but good conversion kit for making a mountain bike single speed?
I bought a cheap mountain bike and I would like to convert it to single speed. I don’t know much but since I’m a college student I’m trying my best to save some money. So if you could help me out what is a good kit to buy for my single speed conversion?
The reason I want a single speed is because my college is in the city and so I don’t need to switch gears.
Even if I shorten the chain couldn’t the bike shift gears on accident to a lower gear from like a big bump or something?
Also I tried to shorten the chain but I have no idea how too.
I’ve done it lots of times:
1: remove shifter cables/handlebar mechanisms
2: remove front and rear derailleurs; I am lazy, and use a dremel saw to cut them so i can get the chain out, but that isn’t necessary
3: buy new chain and fit to length, or CAREFULLY remove some links. NOTE: once you pop out a pin entirely, you can’t put it back in.
Ta da! Simple, and eliminate a very little amount of weight.
THough, why would you want a single speed MTB? Shifting is more efficient, as teh parts you would remove to make it single speed aren’t a significant weight additive…
