Best horse for a tender back? What horses are the smoothest rides?
I’ve read about TWH, Racking, Mountain horses, Morgans and so many more…But I am just confused. Can you find a Paint or Appaloosa or just a generic horse that will have a sittable trot and easy canter ? I have ridden western all I can, all my life (which has not been enough times due to circumstances beyond my control) and now I can just afford a horse, but my back is injured and don’t know if it will permanently heal. I love horses and don’t need it to be fancy. It needs to be between 14.2 and 15.3 and not too wide, as knees operations won’t let me grip stocky horses. There are so many horse ads. What breeds or disciplines do I look and ask for, for my needs, especially my back? I plan to pay for training with the horse. I plan to just trail ride. Please help!
I sympathize, as I too suffer (horribly) from back problems that will not heal, unless surgery is chosen! I ride a mustang mare, she is fairly smooth and easygoing. I also have a foxtrotter gelding and arab mare that are also just as smooth and easy. I also trailride. Just begin with looking at several horses, and look for horses that are trained well and are respectful, easy trailhorses. I gaited horse may be good, but keep in mind, they tend to be more ‘hyper’ than a lot of other breeds. Slow and easy is key. Training with the horse is good also, the horse will pick up on your needs, believe it or not. Look long and hard, there is a perfect horse waiting for you!
